Push underway to nix road district

Posted on Tuesday, March 19, 2019 at 12:37 pm

An effort is underway to dissolve the Louisiana Special Road District, a governmental body responsible for dozens of miles of roads around Louisiana.

Clark Pointer and Dayton Betts, both residents and landowners in the district, came to the Thursday, March 7 meeting of the Pike County Commission to look into the process for dissolving a special road district. Betts visited again during the Thursday, March 14 meeting of the Commission to learn more after the commission had a chance to run the process past legal counsel.

Their complaint: a low standard of maintenance on the roads overseen by the district. District leadership objects to the characterization.

“{We need] to get some maintenance done out there. They don’t have enough money to do anything with,“ Pointer said. “Those roads right now, if you want to find out about them, just take a ride out of Louisiana.”

“It would be one thing if they were trying, but they’re not even trying,” Betts said.

Pointer and Betts both said the issue was a long-standing concern.
