Members of the Louisiana High School Quizbowl team traveled to Columbia College on Saturday, Dec. 8 to compete in the Missouri Quizbowl Association Fall Championship. The team was 9-2 on the day, losing two matches to Hallsville A. After round 10, St. Joseph Central, Hallsville A, and Louisiana each had one loss in a set of evenly matched super-playoff games: Hallsville won by 10 points over Louisiana in round eight, Louisiana won by five points over Central in round nine, and Central won by 15 points over Hallsville in round 10.
This set up a two-stage final, seeded by points per game within the super-playoff pool. Hallsville won the first game 385-200 over Louisiana to earn the small school title and advance to the championship game against Central. Central won the final game 320-260 to earn the title of tournament champion.
This left Louisiana in third place, despite giving the eventual champions St. Joseph Central their only loss of the day. The Bulldogs were once again led by senior captain Michael Powers, who placed first individually in the tournament with an average of 143 points per game. Marin Powers, Evan Jones, and Rachel Beard each answered one “power” and one tossup, and Hunter Hobbs answered a tossup.
LHS Quizbowl will be in action again on Jan. 8 when they start their EMO Conference season with a Quad meet against Clopton, Mark Twain, and Silex. The team is hosting the Scholastic Tournament Acclaiming the Recall of Knowledge (STARK) here at Louisiana on Saturday, Jan. 12.
