Robert and Donna Henry, of rural Pike County, were married 45 years ago on Valentine’s Day — but it was a near thing.
Donna, Robert, and their guests were all gathered at a small country church in Texas, their home at the time, when it became clear that Robert’s brother, his best man, had left their marriage license behind.
The officiating preacher said he could not do the ceremony without it.
“The church is full of people, I’m standing outside in the parking lot, and this is the word,” Donna said.
A last minute dash back home by a close friend allowed them to wed that day, kicking off almost a half-century of married life and securing a memorable anniversary.
That was part of the idea, according to Donna:
“Well, I didn’t want Bob to forget our anniversary, and I figured if the entire country was pushing it, maybe Bob would remember.”
