There are two many easy puns to use when writing about coaching–keeping all the balls in the air, having his plate full. But, Bill Capps, the softball coach at LHS, does perform a daily balancing act. As a head coach and an FFA advisor, he always has obligations to meet.
“As an FFA advisor, there are times where I have to leave practice early to get to an FFA activity. Coach Teresa Long runs practice during those times, and we try to keep those to a minimum.”
This season will be different for Capps. “I’m approaching the season with mixed emotions,” he said. “I’m excited to get the team on the field and competing in games. But, it will be bittersweet in that I’m retiring at the end of this school year.”
The team has had a tough start to the year–a record of 0-4 at press time, but he is keeping their focus sharp. Although the team lost two key players in Raelee Burse and Kaylan Lindsay, Capps said he has a strong group of veterans in Maria Gutierrez, Autumn Castagna, Stephanie Mills, Gretchen Capps, and Faith Rule. In addition, he expects Abby Moore, Kindell Crowder, Marin Powers, and Michelle Watts to make significant impacts.
