LOUISIANA – The annual Elks Chicken Barbecue fundraiser to raise money for the George Keith Memorial Scholarship fund took place Saturday.
It was Danny Wood Jr.’s second year chairing the barbeque. As he and his fellow volunteers were at work cleaning up the barbecue Saturday afternoon, Wood reported that they had served 683 halves of chicken—possibly a drop from last year but still a healthy turnout.
“We had people waiting for chicken because we couldn’t get them out fast enough,” Wood said.
The George Keith Memorial Scholarship provides $1,000 each for five students—one attending school Pleasant Hill, Bowling Green, Louisiana, Clopton and an at-large scholarship for an Elk member.
The team behind the barbeque sent 25 chickens to Clarksville to support the flood-fighting efforts there and held some in reserve against the possibility that the Elks would be hosting people displaced by flooding in Louisiana.
