Two strong performances by junior pitcher Kaitlyn VanHooser helped produce consecutive wins for the Louisiana Lady Bulldogs going into the district tournament.
The tourney will be at Wallace Park in Louisiana this year and begins Wednesday, Oct. 9. Firemen’s Field will be used although renovations are not complete.
The Lady Bulldogs are 5-17 on the year.
Louisiana produced a satisfying victory in the last regularly scheduled game on Monday, Oct. 7 on the road against the Montgomery County Lady Wildcats.
“It was a good win over Montgomery,” said Louisiana Head Coach Bill Capps. “We hit the ball hard and VanHooser pitched well. We’re definitely playing our best ball of the season now when it counts.”
The Lady Bulldogs only got six hits but drew eight walks to produce plenty of base runners.
Sophomore catcher Samantha Henderson went two-for-three with a double, a walk and a run scored.
Sophomore utility player Denise Blackwell had an RBI triple and scored once.
Vanhooser walked twice and one of them forced in a run for an RBI.
Junior shortstop Morgan Murry had a single and scored once. Sophomore first baseman Bailey Wallace had a hit, drew two walks and scored once.
Senior third baseman Caitlin Bolton walked once and scored. Junior outfielder Ashley Martin had a single and Allison Lawson scored a run.
The Lady Bulldogs kept their late-season turnaround going with an all-around victory at home on Senior Night, Tuesday, Oct. 1.
The Lady Bulldogs got three runs in the first two innings to give winning pitcher VanHooser enough cushion to win.
“We came a lot closer to playing to our potential tonight,” Capps said.
“Offensively we put the ball in play from top to bottom in our lineup. Our batters are doing a much better job of working the count and making the other pitcher throw more pitches.
“Defensively, I thought we played extremely well. We kept our focus throughout the game and made big plays when we had to.
“I can’t say enough about VanHooser tonight. She was throwing the ball hard and had all of her pitches working well. If we can stay this focused we can close this season strong.”
Vanhooser earned the complete-game win, allowing only one earned run over seven innings, while striking out 11 and walking five.
Bolton led the attack by going two-for-four, which included and RBI double in the first inning. Murry knocked in two runs in the second inning with a single.
Freshman infielder Molly Ross had a hit, walked once, scored twice and added an RBI. Wallace had one hit, walked once, scored once and had an RBI.
Sophomore outfielder Taylor Cunningham had a hit and scored once. Martin scored after walking, as did junior outfielder Sam Pedersen.
The Lady Bulldogs will host the Class 2, District 11 Tournament at Wallace Park in Louisiana. They will play the first game at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 9 against Lutheran-St. Peters.
If Louisiana wins, it will play top-seeded Elsberry at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 10. The championship game will be at 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 11.
