The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and the Lincoln County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) will host a soil health workshop Nov. 7 in Elsberry that will include information from demonstration plots featuring 36 different cover crop species.
Ron Cordsiemon, manager of NRCS’ Plant Materials Center (PMC) at Elsberry, said plant specialists at the center seeded each of the 36 species on six different dates and have been documenting their progress.
In addition to visiting the field test plots, workshop participants will see demonstrations that show the difference between healthy soils and non-healthy soils in their ability to hold together and allow for infiltration of rainfall.
After the outdoor session at the PMC, the group will move to the American Legion Hall in Elsberry for presentations by several soil health and cover crop experts.
Pre-registration for the event is being handled by the Lincoln County SWCD. The workshop fee is $12, which includes lunch. Register by Oct. 24 by calling 636-528-4877, extension 3.
