BONCL third-and -fourth grade students started the school year off with an exploration of the math and science behind rockets.
On Friday, Aug. 30, community member and BONCL parent George Hilton worked with BONCL students to discuss and design rockets. Each student worked with Hilton and their teacher, Miss Diana Shaw, to design and decorate their own rocket.
Students were encouraged to consider various factors that would impact its flight during the design phase. On Friday, Sept. 6, students gathered in the front lawn of the school to launch their rockets and experiment with different factors affecting flight.
Topics discussed with students included distance, height, angles, and the aerodynamics of the rocket. Materials and supplies for this project were provided by Hilton with donations from LaCrosse Lumber Co. and Louisiana Plumbing and Heating in Louisiana.
At the conclusion of the rocket launch, the following awards were given: best decorated girl was Arcada McCulley; best decorative boy was Gaven Crabtree; flight leader was given to Jordan Haynes; best launch was Scotty Turner; smoothest flight was James Hilton; wildest flight was Nathan Taylor; highest flight was Ethan Campbell; longest flight was Will Sheppard; and best landing went to Isabella Settles.
