Kids in Motion raise funds for YMCA pool in memory of Abbi Lucas
Bowling Green participants in the Kids in Motion program, shown above with instructors Amy Becker and Heather Spegal, back row, left side, and Y program director Melissa Corbin, back row, right side, participated in a friendly competition with the Louisiana KIM program to raise frunds for the Twin Pike Family YMCA pool project in memory of their former classmate and friend, Abbi Lucas.
What started out as a friendly competition ended up as a successful fundraiser this summer for the Kids in Motion (KIM) programs of Bowling Green and Louisiana.
The two groups raised a total of $549.75.
They held bake sales and window washes this summer to see which group could raise the most money in memory of their former classmate, Abbi Lucas. Lucas, who attended school in Bowling Green, died earlier this year after a long battle with cancer.
The two KIM groups donated the funds to the Twin Pike Family YMCA phase three expansion project to build an indoor pool and walking track at the Louisiana facility.
The Bowling Green KIM group was the victor of the competition, raising $301. The Louisiana group raised $228.75. Advisors for the two programs emphasized that the competition was all in fun and that the kids were really focused on helping the YMCA complete fundraising for the indoor pool, while paying tribute to their former classmate and friend.
The KIM website states that the mission of the KIM program is to teach teens and pre-teens to value work, to value their community, and to value their future. KIM strives to provide a positive experience for youth that will greatly impact their lives through service to others.
The program encourages strong work ethic, personal responsibility and self-reliance. Equally important, however, it teaches them they can make a difference in the lives of their community and others.
The Kids in Motion programs in Bowling Green and Louisiana are funded by the Douglass Community Services, Inc. office in Hannibal.
