Former Clopton High School second baseman Matt Williams has received a scholarship to play baseball for Missouri Valley College in Marshall.
“I got a late scholarship,” Williams said last week. “It’s pretty great.
“I know it will be tougher up there,” than it was during his career playing in the Eastern Missouri Conference.
Williams said he was unsure if Missouri Valley will need him as an infielder and would be just as happy to play the outfield for the NAIA team.
Williams started for Clopton in all 16 games last year and hit .409, with an on-base percentage of .509 and a slugging percentage of .545.
The infielder had 18 hits, including three doubles and a homer. He also walked nine times and scored 14 runs.
Williams also did well with his glove, registering only one error all season on 16 chances for a .938 fielding percentage.
He will join former Clopton first baseman Hank Owens, another 2013 Clopton graduate who signed earlier with the Vikings.
