YMCA students learn about gardening, recycling
Students attending area YMCA day camps visited Lil’ Sprouts Farm on Wednesday, June 19, in Louisiana.
Though Vanessa and Troy Thomas have lived in Louisiana for only a few years, the couple has already made huge strides in order to preserve the environment and give back to the community.
For the first time, kids from surrounding YMCA day camps had the opportunity to visit the Thompsons’ Lil’ Sprouts Farm and learn how they can help and take full advantage of the environment. The event also featured several speakers from local organizations, such as the Pike County Sheltered Workshop and Natural Resources Conservation Service.
Vanessa Thomas hoped to “show (the kids) a different aspect of a healthy food cycle” and stressed the importance of “using nature for everything you possibly can.”
Guest speaker Tom Thompson, director at Pike County Sheltered Workshop, visited the farm to explain to the kids the importance of recycling.
