Louisiana Cemetery and Parks Department head Ronnie Rue was killed in a work accident on Monday, April 22, according to Mayor Tom Wallace.
Rue, 61, was working on a riding lawn mower that was on a ramp inside the cemetery work shed, Wallace said.
Rue had built the ramp about 14 inches high so he could work underneath the mower, according to City Administrator Bob Jenne.
“He was going to put a hydraulic line in and maybe one of the wheels didn’t get chalked,” Jenne said Tuesday, April 23. “We think he was looking underneath it to see what tools he would need because he didn’t have any tools in his hand when he was found. Apparently, it rolled back down on his chest and he basically suffocated.”
The accident will be investigated by OSHA, the federal government’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Wallace said.
Rue was employed by the city in 1984 and was a respected employee, he added.
“He was always conscientious on the job. It’s tragic,” Wallace said.
