The annual meeting of Louisiana Housing Association, Inc., was held on Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 10 a.m. at the manager’s office on Tella Jane Lane.
The association is a locally owned and operated 5013 corporation, and is in the business of providing 68 apartments at an affordable rate for senior citizens, handicapped disables and for families with no more than four individuals, the rent is based on income.
Some rental assistance is available from USDA Rural Development and from HUD Section 8 administered by the NECAC agency based in Bowling Green. The association operates at three locations: Field Village at 1000 North Carolina Street, Swisher Village in the 200 block of North Seventh and North Eight streets, and Waltman Village in the 500 block of Tella Jane Lane.
Three two-bedroom apartments are available, all of these at Swisher Village. All other units are one bed-room apartments. The association was formally organized the 1976 and built Field Village that year. Swisher was built in 1980 and Waltman in 1986.
The annual meeting was called to elect three board members for three-year terms. Those elected by the membership are Donald Bronson, James Flaherty, and Robert H. Ince. Bronson and Flaherty were re-elected and Ince now joins the board as a new member replacing Joyce Bell, who chose not to be a candidate at this time.
Mrs. Bell was first elected to the board in January 1993, and she has served faithfully for these many years. Mr. Bronson was first elected to the board in 1976 and served until 1981, and came on the board again in April 2012 replacing Mary Haddock, who had passed away. Mr. Flaherty became a member of the board in January 2001.
Other business of the annual meeting conducted was to elect officers. Those chosen were the Rev. D. Randall Cone, president James Flaherty, vice-president serving in that position since 2002; Grace Jane Catlett, secretary/treasurer serving since January 2006 in that position; and Mary Littrell, assistant secretary/treasurer serving in that position since January 2003.
Cone was first elected to the board in January 1987 and served until 1993, and then was re-elected to the board in 1996 and has served president since January 1998. Catlett came on the board in January 2005. Mary Littrell has been a member since January 2001.
Other members of the board are Mary Ellen Griffith who became a board member in May 2005 and Robert Kilby who has served on the board since January 2001, and Delores Poor who became a board member in January 2006.
Mrs. Ronnie (Brenda) Hurd became the site manager and bookkeeper for the association in January 2009 and keeps regular hours at the housing office at 522 Tella Jane Lane.
She oversees the property including maintenance matters. Accounting matters are referred to Tax and Accountins Solutions, Louisiana, with Myra Martin Knight as official contact at that business.
