Elks to hold Flag Day event
The Louisiana, Missouri Lodge No. 791 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks will observe Flag Day. The event will be held in the Elks Lodge Hall located at 120 North 5th Street at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 14. Light refreshments will be available after the ceremony. The public is invited to attend the event.
Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which happened June 14, 1777 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress.
Previous to any national acceptance of Flag Day as an observed holiday, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, by order of Resolution, designated June 14 as Flag Day in 1907. In 1911, the Grand Lodge of the Order adopted mandatory observance of the occasion by every Lodge, and that requirement continues.
In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day; in August 1949, National Flag Day was established by an act of Congress.
