Clopton comes from behind to beat Bulldogs
Some games appear to be runaways in the early going and it looked like the Louisiana Bulldogs baseball squad was going to pummel the Clopton Hawks at home on Friday, May 2.
The Bulldogs were leading 7-2 after four innings because of a rash of walks from Clopton pitchers and doubles by Louisiana senior first baseman Austin Baker and junior center fielder Dallas Castagna.
But the Hawks bounced back with 10 runs in the last three innings and came back to win 12-9, proving the old adage “It ain’t over ‘till it’s over.” Louisiana committed six errors, which led to five Hawks’ runs.
“We had them beat and we let them off the hook,” said Louisiana Head Coach Ryan Griffin. “We are really focused on conference right now and we had to save some arms for conference games this week.”
Sophomore Clopton pitcher Josh Miller got the win in relief, giving up one earned run, three hits and striking out two in one inning on the mound.
Junior David Dietz started and gave up four earned runs on seven hits and six walks, while striking out four over 3 and 1/3 innings.
Sophomore Luke Adams came on in relief in the middle of the fourth inning and gave up one earned run on four hits and three walks while striking out none.
Miller was also the star hitter on the day, driving in five runs with a double and a single. He also stole a base.
Junior catcher Michael Werkmeister hit a three-run home run off Castagna for the biggest hit of the day and scored once.
Adams went three-for five with a double, an RBI and one run scored.
Dietz went three-for-four with an RBI and two runs scored.
Junior first baseman Vince Hollocher went two-for-five with an RBI and one run scored.
Freshman left fielder Jamon Graham went two-for-three, stole two bases, walked once and scored once.
Junior infielder Jordan Williams walked twice and scored three runs, two of them on errors.
Senior infielder James David scored two runs after being hit by pitches twice. Freshman Kevin Hammett scored once on an error after a walk.
For Louisiana, starting junior pitcher Hank Calvin gave up only one earned run on seven hits and four walks while striking out six in 4 and 2/3 innings. Castagna gave up one earned run on four hits and struck out seven.
At the plate, Castagna had a pair of RBIs and scored once after his double. Calvin had two RBIs on two walks.
Junior third baseman Brandon Holland went two-for-four, had one RBI and scored once.
Baker went three-for-four and scored three runs.
Junior second baseman Spencer Brown and senior infielder Dustin Green both had one hit and one RBI.
Senior infielder Justin Lenz walked twice and scored two runs. Sophomore shortstop Zach Richardson walked once and scored.
