Bowling Green man drowns after canoe flips

A Bowling Green man drowned on Thursday, April 17 when the canoe he was in tipped over, according to Sheriff Stephen Korte.
The Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call at 12:43 p.m. that a canoe had flipped over on a private lake west of Curryville and that only one of the two occupants had surfaced.  The caller was on the bank of the lake fishing and observed the canoe flip.

Sheriff’s deputies, the Curryville Fire Protection District and Pike County EMS responded to the scene.
Daniel Ortega, 43, of Bowling Green, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Pike County coroner.  The second occupant of the canoe was treated at the scene.
The Louisiana Fire Department responded with its boat to make the recovery of Ortega.
