Louisiana Bulldogs baseball team splits in tournament doubleheader
The Louisiana Bulldogs won huge and barely lost in their opening games of the season on Saturday, March 22.
The games were played at Louisiana in the opening round of the annual Clarence Cannon Conference Tournament.
second round of the tournament is scheduled for Saturday, April 5 at Louisiana. The Bulldogs will play Mark Twain at 9 a.m. and Highland at 1:30 p.m.
The Bulldogs and the Tigers starting pitchers had good days, but Macon eeked out the win in the opening game of the tourney.
Louisiana junior pitcher Brandon Holland started and had four good innings. Holland gave up only two hits and one unearned run, while striking out seven and walking only one. He did not get the decision.
Sophomore pitcher Zach Richardson came on in relief, pitched two innings and gave up four hits and one unearned run to take the loss.
Junior center fielder Dallas Castagna walked once, slapped a single and scored the Bulldogs lone run.
Junior second baseman Hank Calvin also had a hit for Louisiana in three trips to the plate.
It was a different story in the second game, when the Bulldogs’ bats came alive and Louisiana buried the Indians, invoking the 10-run rule in five innings. Louisiana’s pitchers also dominated, giving up only one hit in the contest.
Senior pitcher Dustin Green pitched four strong innings, giving up only one hit. Green struck out six batters and walked only one.
Castagna pitched the fifth inning, gave up no hits and struck out the side.
Playing designated hitter, Holland erupted with six RBIs with a single, double and a sacrifice fly. He also scored a run.
Playing shortstop, Richardson smashed a triple, had one RBI, walked and scored twice.
Senior first baseman Austin Baker scored three times and had one RBI on a double and two walks.
Castagna had a single, walked once and scored one run.
Junior shortstop Justin Lenz was two for three. Green doubled in three trips to the plate.
The Bulldogs were scheduled to play at home against the Silex Owls at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, March 26.
Louisiana is scheduled to play next at Bowling Green starting at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 27.
The Bulldogs will be on the road again at Van-Far starting at 5 p.m. on Friday, March 28.
Louisiana will end the week back home starting at 4:30 p.m. against Wellsville on Monday, March 31.
