Barbara Hickey’s 25th anniversary
Julie Stephens, an Elder of the church and a long-time member of the choir, is shown presenting a certificate of appreciation to Barbara.
On Sunday, Feb. 9, the congregation of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Louisiana honored Barbara Hickey, who observed her 25th year as the church’s organist and pianist.
Through all kinds of bad weather and road conditions, Barbara has managed to make it to almost every church service and choir practice during all those years, as well as serving as organist for many funerals and weddings that have been held in the sanctuary.
Barbara was born in Nebraska and studied piano at Beth Miller Piano School in Lincoln later studying independently to learn to play the organ. Her first organ teacher was the instrumental music teacher at her high school in Tecumseh, Neb. Barbara played many years at churches in Nebraska before moving to Missouri with her husband, Walter, in 1966.
She served as a part-time organist in Bowling Green for many years. She is the mother of Zola Finch of Lohman, Mo. and Zella Eliason of Louisiana.
The congregation gave her a standing ovation for her years of dedicated service and in appreciation of her talents.
During a luncheon following the worship service, Barbara was surprised with a cake decorated for the occasion in her honor.
