Louisiana girls lose in first round at Monroe City Tournament, 58-41
Sophomore guard Macie Crane stretches out for a rebound against Griggsville-Perry.
The Louisiana Lady Bulldogs lost to the Marion County Lady Mustangs, 58-41, in the first round of the Monroe City Tournament on Monday, Dec. 9.
The Lady Bulldogs are now 2-1 on the season.
The game started well for Louisiana with a 19-12 first-quarter run.
However, the Lady Bulldogs were flat in the second quarter and were down 33-25 as they went into the locker room.
“We started the game on a 6-0 run and forced them to take an early timeout,” said Lady Bulldogs Head Coach Craig Pedersen.
“We were able to put pressure on the ball and were able to break their press leading to some easy buckets. We got into foul trouble in the second quarter and had to take the pressure off.”
The third quarter was back and forth and the Lady Bulldogs entered the fourth quarter down by nine at 47-38.
Louisiana went flat again in the fourth quarter, allowing Marion County an 11-3 run that led to the defeat.
“We could not put the ball into the hole and they got some easy buckets in transition to push the game out to a 17-point win,” Pedersen said.
Sophomore post player Denise Blackwell led the Lady Bulldogs with 14 points.
Senior guard Caitlin Bolton had 13 points.
The Lady Bulldogs took the wind out of the Griggsville-Perry Lady Tornadoes with a 17-4 run in the first quarter and never looked back on Dec. 3.
Bolton caught fire in the first half and drained four three-pointers. Louisiana’s trapping defense caused numerous turnovers that led to easy baskets and stole the ball 19 times.
Louisiana was ahead 31-13 at the half and 42-15 at the end of the third quarter. That allowed Pedersen to give the bench some playing time.
Bolton finished with 18 points to lead the Lady Bulldogs. She also had two assists, a rebound and three steals.
Denise Blackwell had a solid game with 12 points, four assists, four rebounds and five steals.
Senior forward Batrice Backwell had seven points, two assists, three rebounds, four steals and a blocked shot.
Sophomore guard-forward Taylor Cunningham had four points, two assists and led the team with six rebounds.
Sophomore guard-forward Allison Lawson had four points and a rebound.
Sophomore guard Macie Crane had three points, grabbed five rebounds and had a steal.
