Clopton runners compete at state cross country meet
Brittney Hamilton was the leader of the Clopton girls cross country team as a senior.
The Clopton High School cross country team had two runners qualify for the state cross country meet on Saturday, Nov. 9 at Oak Hills Golf Center in Jefferson City.
Senior Brittney Hamilton and junior Daniel Reading competed with the best Class 1 runners in Missouri, but did not medal.
In her last cross country race for Clopton, Hamilton placed 76th out of 160 with a time of 23 minutes, 51 seconds.
Reading placed 141st out of 170 with a time of 20:39.
“I had very high expectations this season, especially for the varsity boys team,” said Head Coach Colleen O’Brien. “Unfortunately, we were unable to keep a healthy team throughout the season, and hopefully we will be able to next year.
“The boys side will really miss senior James David as a leader and teammate. He has always gone above and beyond. He is a great teammate staying after practice, running extra with the state qualifiers to give them competition.
“I will also miss senior Brittney Hamilton. All she wanted for the cross country program was to have a girls team.”
“We were always a little short on our numbers. Hopefully next year we can pull together a full varsity girls teams as I have three eighth graders moving up next year.”
Seniors Sarah Huckstep and Travis Kuykendall will also be lost to graduation.
